Solar powered generator help!? I want to make a solar generator. I found a solar panel that is 12v and 5 watts. I have a deep cycle battery that is 12v. How much power in volts and watts would I have if i fully charged the battery with my solar panel. I am young and don't know too much about this subject so keep it simple. Wow, this sounds like fun. I used to work with Solar projects for EPRI and NASA, so I can give you a few tips: 1. 5 watts is a pretty small panel. You don't want to put it on a large battery (like a car or boat battery), or the battery's tendency to discharge will happen faster than the cell can keep it charged! A battery for a kid's scooter or car is probably about right (5 to 10 amp hr rating). 2. Even though your panel can deliver 5 watts peak, the actual power it will delivers varies with it's angle to the sun, the weather, how clean the face is, and the length of the day. It's not unusual to average only 1/5 to 1/7 of the output of the cell per day. So, you can expect to get about 24 watt-hrs to 17 watt-hrs per day. That's about 2 to 1.4 amp hours. 3. The batteries don't charge perfectly, and they lose some charge just sitting around. Count on getting about 80% of the energy your putting in. So, count on having 1.6 to 1.12 amp hrs to power your gadgets for every day of charging. You can run a small radio just about indefinitely on this, or a small brushless fan (about .1amp for about 11-16 hours), a small fluorescent lamp for maybe 4 hours, or even a small TV for maybe an hour. Have Fun! . Michael | Read more How do you connect a solar panel and wind generator in parallel? I have an ~18v solar panel and a ~15v wind turbine. Sometimes one generates more voltage than the other. How would I get both of them to charge one ~12v battery? I can't just connect them in parallel with diodes, because in that case, only the higher voltage source gets used. Is there a special charge controller circuit that will do this? Placing diodes in series with each source to the battery would solve your problem. You should use a charge controller on the system to prevent overcharging the battery. I've put together a relatively simple dump load circuit which diverts excess power to high power resistors. It is part of a wind charging system with inputs from wind, solar, and a DC power supply. http://members.rennlist.org/warren/wind.html http://members.rennlist.org/warren/rackwiring.jpg http://members.rennlist.org/warren/dumpload.html Warren914 | Read more Is 2 watts enough to power a HHO generator? Hello Everyone, I am interested in making a HHO generator that is powered by a solar panel that produces 12v but only 2 watts. Is this enough to produce a good amount of hydrogen and oxygen? 13gentj, To run your car on hydrogen and oxygen you would need more energy than your car produces in the first place. This is because of the inefficiency of the engine and the inefficiency of producing these elements from water through electrolysis. So you are right to think of adding energy. A solar cell is a clean way to do this. But you have to be realistic in your goals. This set up is not going to produce very much gas but it would be possible to figure out exactly how much and what this will do for you. At 12v your output of 2w means the system is producing about .167amps, not very much. An additional problem would be to keep the solar panel oriented properly if you intend to use this set up in a moving vehicle. Most solar photovoltaic panels you can buy are only 8 to 20% efficient. When the sun is striking the panel at an angle this can drop off significantly. What have you been smoking? Some 'makeee learneee is in order. 1. That inverter is 8 KW. LOAD, 16 KW peaks rated. 8 KW. is the most you can draw on it for more than a second or two. 2. To set up a system the KWH per day is more important than any peak, though you are limited to that 8KW draw at any one time. 3. You need enough solar panels to supply your KWH per day in the Four to six peak sun hours you will get per day + enough to recharge your depleted battery bank if you get a rainy day. 4. You need a battery bank capable of storing two days power minimum. You have given no load information, so lets say you were lucky enough to buy the appropriate inverter, and your daily usage is somewhere in the neighborhood of 8KWH/day. You would need about 2500W. in solar panels, and 1250 Amp Hr.s in 12V. batteries. And that won't carry you through more than one 'bad sun' day. Begin to get the picture? Irv S | Read more |
